Kerri Strug 1996 Olympics Vault

May 6, 2008

Above is one of the greatest moments in olympic gymnastics!

The US women were on the verge of an historic win in the team competition in Atlanta. Then the unthinkable happened: Dominique Moceanu, the youngest member of the team, fell on both of her vaults in the last event of the day.

With just a slim lead over the Russian team, it was essential that Kerri Strug, the final American gymnast to perform, nail her vault. But Strug fell too, injuring her ankle in the process. With just one more shot, Strug ignored her injury and ran down for another attempt, sticking her vault before crumpling to the floor in pain.

In doing so, she assured the American team its first Olympic team gold, and instantly became one of the most recognizable faces of the 1996 Games.

Tony Robbins tells this story when he talks about team, commitment, and raising your standards.

As we are developing our new elite team we talk of these things often.

I think about what worked well in the past, what didn’t and how to avoid the same mistakes.

It mainly came down to who you hire and who you don’t fire that makes up the dynamic.

We talk about demanding more than anyone else can!

We talk about pushing beyond limits!

We talk about not just being good but being OUTSTANDING!

We talk about following the system (rituals) and being coachable!

We talk about thinking BIG, work ethic and seeing the job through with tenacity and heart!

We talk about being a professional!

I hope that one day our team can be as strong and harmonic as the 1996 USA Team!

Are you inspired? Do you have the mental control to get up like Kerri?

Happy Cinco de Mayo!

  1. Decide if you want to STRETCH YOURSELF! If you do, (Double your Efforts), what are the reasons why? i.e. Work harder (I hope not), So I can BE more creative, experimental, faster pace, more fun, more $, get better? Convince yourself!

    2.   Commit to being RESPONSIBLE for your performance. Use the resources around you.

a.)   Fire yourself, rehire yourself.

b.)   Get out of your plateau/slump/depression and get back to feeling the feelings that move you! Who or   what do you love? What are you passionate about? Who says you can’t? Who are you obligated to prove wrong?

c.)   Eliminate negative thoughts and people. Fill your mind (or ipod) daily with powerful music, courses, classes, seminars, motivation etc.

d.)   Check back in!

a.)   You know when you are being resilient when your center of tension is in the throat and/or heart NOT your solar plexus, abdomen or navel (those are the places you feel anger or fear)

b.)   When you are flexible you come from a position of strength and can ALWAYS dominate. You are coming from a place knowing that there is ALWAYS a way – not one with limits.

-Know your OUTCOME

-Take MASSIVE immediate all out ACTION towards it

-MEASURE if you are getting closer

-CHANGE YOUR APPROACH if you are not working and if that does not work change again, again,  again until it does

      4.   Commit to being a TEAM PLAYER. Commit to being a leader. Commit to being a PROFESSIONAL

a.) Put customer #1. Come from a place of caring. Solve their problem.

b.) Ask yourself “how is this question or comment going to help us get to the common goal?”

c.) Don’t major in minor things. Major in Major things! In other words focus in on your target zones! The highest and best use of YOUR time…that is going to give YOU the highest return.

d.) Eliminate “Time Vampires” out of your sphere

      5.   Maintain a high ENERGY LEVEL. It is tough sometimes but always worth it!

a.) Demand more from yourself then anyone else

b.) If you don’t have belief then one distraction will knock you off course

            c.) Enthusiasm is contagious!

 Print, save and ingrain.

PETCO DOG PARK (The Park at the Park)

April 19, 2008

I have never been much of an activist but this calls for some noise…

I live in Downtown San Diego and have been for over 5 years (before the ballpark.)

If there is an actual “whistler-blowers (train noise) society” downtown there should be one to keep the dog park at Petco!

I can’t even believe the amount of dogs downtown and from the most recent pool I have seen ($268K a door at an average square footage of 1100~) it is not nearly enough room for these guys to play.

It is one of the major pros of living downtown…have a zag day…grab a cup of joe on a Saturday morning, walk to the park with your dog, hang with some regulars, let your dog run till he/she can’t run anymore and then end up at Cafe 222 for some tasty breakfast.

Well folks on Friday the 18th of April 2008 PETCO has decided to close the park off to dogs. Some say it is because some neurotic lady complained because a dog ran past a kid and the kid fell down, some say its because the dogs were disturbing the bums sleeping in the park. I dont know about you but In my opinion dogs should have more rights than bums. Whatever the rumor is WHO CARES!

I can understand not letting the dogs in the park on game day but we need a park downtown to let dogs safely play and be active! It is the fun of downtown and one of the reasons PETCO park became PETCO park.

Downtown (unlike Old Town) is so dog friendly! – Let’s keep it that way!

If you want to re-open PETCO park to the dogs I encourage you to make some noise!

We need your help and support

uhhhmmmm so good! It is always a tough time deciding between the NOBU in the Hard Rock or Taka

If you do decide to go to Taka ask for a “Viagra Shot” from my favorite sushi chef and friend, Honda.

(UPDATE: Honda is now at Azuki Sushi in Bankers Hill)

(No I will not tell you what is in it…you will just have to take my word for it)
